Danny Diamond & Brian Miller (Ballydehob Trad Festival) ❤️🎶🎻

We welcome Danny Diamond to kick off Levis’s programme for the Ballydehob Traditional Music Festival.

Danny  is a musician, researcher, and sound engineer with a background in Irish traditional/folk music, currently based between Minneapolis, USA and Dublin, Ireland. Let Fly, Danny’s latest album of traditional fiddle tunes with accompaniment from multi-instrumentalist Brian Miller, was launched in February 2021.

Born in Belfast into a cross-community family with deep roots in traditional music, Danny spent his formative years immersed in the tradition: learning, playing and performing at festivals and music sessions around Ireland. Later he was centrally involved in the early years of Ireland’s ongoing folk music revival, as a performer, archivist and sound engineer. In recent years Danny has toured internationally, creating and performing collaborative projects with writers, dance companies and visual artists.

Past work includes: fiddle player, Musical Director and co-composer of the score for Teac Damsa’s multi award-winning dance theatre show Swan Lake / Loch na hEala (2016-2020). Swan Lake was one of the most successful Irish theatre productions of the past decade; with it Danny toured internationally for 5 years, including performances in the Sydney Opera House, Dublin’s Abbey Theatre, BAM Brooklyn and Saddlers Wells, London, among many others.

Danny co-founded the acclaimed Irish-Nordic indie folk band Slow Moving Clouds and played with them from 2014-2018, during which time they performed widely in Ireland, toured the UK, released two albums, and joined the PEOPLE collective led by members of the National and Bon Iver.

Previously Danny toured in Ireland and Europe with Irish traditional band Mórga (2007-2016), releasing two albums along the way. He has also released three solo albums: Fiddle Music (2014) and Elbow Room (2017); along with the duo recordings NORTH (2016, with Conor Caldwell), and Let Fly (2021, with Brian Miller).

This performance by Danny and Brian Miller (Bua, The Lost Forty) brings together two of the top Irish traditional/folk musicians in the US. Their soulful and compelling live performances run the gamut from sensitive waltzes to tearaway reels, punctuated by impeccable arrangements of newly-unearthed traditional songs.

Building on their 2021 duo album, Let Fly, a new expanded live set digs deep into Diamond’s musical roots in the north of Ireland. Tunes combine in long, evolving sets, played with sensitivity and rhythm, blurring the lines between melody and accompaniment. Miller’s tasteful arrangements of rediscovered and remade folksongs from the Irish-American tradition add a reflective new dimension to the duo’s sound.

Their second album will be released in late 2023.
